Meet Me in the Blue tells the story of Luka and Rook, childhood best friends, estranged due to distance, who reunite to face a difficult time as a family. Luka and Rook first met when they were children and Luka’s family moved to the area and their fathers became partners in a medical practice. They were inseparable until college when they went in different directions. Luka, having always been in love with Rook, made the decision to distance himself emotionally and physically after school when he moved to the city to be a photographer. Rook returned home to their small town and joined the family practice. Luka’s father in fighting an endless health battle and Luka returns home to face this difficult time with his family leading to a reunion with him and Rook. While things are rocky to start and emotions are high, Rook and Luka slowly rekindle their friendship and explore what could be.

A ton happens between all these condensed scenes, and I thought their story was told beautifully. I don’t know how she did it, but AM Johnson managed to destroy my emotions, but made my heart sing at the same time. I don’t think I've read a book where I was happy, but also crying sad tears, so kudos to her for accomplishing that. Luka and Rook had such an intense connection and their love for each other was shown in every scene. I enjoyed the way the story was told in the present time of their adult lives with flashbacks to their childhood. This way you felt like you got the whole story of their lives without getting lost in the details. I appreciated the ace/demi representation in this book as I feel like it’s harder to find MM novels with a character that identifies in that way. Maybe it’s because I’ve lived in a small town my whole life, but one of my favorites aspects of a story is the close-knit family and this book checked that box for me. Not only are the individual families close, but you have friends from high school, and people who have known each other forever. I could go on and on about the book, but honestly, I just loved everything about it. I highly recommend checking it out if you are looking for a new read. I will revisiting these characters in the future and I cannot wait to see who the featured couple of book 2 is going to be (although I already have a good idea). ...more "
