These books caught my interest because when I read the summary I saw "viking mercenaries" in the description and immediately wanted to learn more. That said, I was a handful of chapters into book one and went right back onto NetGalley and requested Kingdom of Claw because I knew I was going to need to continue on with the story...and I was right.

If you recall, Road of Bones leaves off on a pretty big cliffhanger with Silla having been betrayed by Jonas. That said, Rey comes through big time and we get to spend a lot of this book learning a lot more about his story which I loved. Yes, we get more of him and Silla building their relationship which is equally as good but we learn so much more about Rey and who he is now because of his backstory.

Silla also has some pretty big growth in this book. Not only is she learning to use her magic but she learns to accept who she is and with the support of Rey, she finds the strength to do that and ultimately decides to fight to put the rightful heir back on the throne...her sister.

The addition of Saga and what is happening at Askaborg Castle in Sunnavik was important to this part of the story as not only do we get to see what's going on with Silla, but we now get to understand what Saga has been dealing with all this time and also what is currently happening as she tries to navigate the politics of staying alive amidst those who killed her entire family and now want to marry her off to their son. This storyline also introduces us to Kass Rurik who has a pretty big secret and I can't wait to learn more about him...hopefuly in the next book.

So...there is a LOT going on in this book and it's safe to say old enemies are still around and there are some new dangers lurking but I loved every minute of this book and the only bad thing is that book three doesn't have a release date yet. I gave out very few five star ratings last year and this one made the list so hopefully that tells you something. If you're looking for a book that has well-developed characters, an interesting story that will keep you turning the pages, magic, betrayal, and so much more...definitely pick this up. I will be sitting here waiting (not so patiently) for the next book.
