I read the book because I wanted to see the movie. I thought it'd be more respectful to the source material to start here, and so I did.

The opening is the model of a great hook. The first page introduced me to the new world I was dealing with and managed to sum up most of Sophie's personality.

The plot is so much fun, the world is adorable and a bit scary, the writing style is charming, and the characters are so well-written I want to cry thinking about them.

Sophie is domineering, thoughtless, and bad-tempered with a cruel streak. She's also sensible, modest, brave, and responsible.

Howl is selfish, vain, and cowardly with a hatred of accountability. And he's usually easy-going, passionate, charming, and easily amused.

These two characters are such emotional messes that if they were paired off with any other character in any fictional world, that relationship would be toxic. Together, however, their flaws and virtues match spectacularly. Sophie is the only human that understands Howl's manic vanity and his fear of himself. Howl is the only one to see that Sophie wants her freedom and the loving family she feels she doesn't deserve. They're precious.

There are plenty of great non-romantic relationships and side characters, too! Howl's problematic sister and her kids that worship him, Sophie's darling step-mother and the sisters she understands to a T. Sweet Michael doing his best to keep Howl from self-destructing and Calcifer almost trying to force him to it.

It took the second reading to see how early the love story started developing because I was so enamored with the plot, but it's definitely there. I only wish the part where Calcifer said that if Howl is truly in love if he eases off his appearance was utilized better. The ending also came up very quickly and sprinted to its resolution.

Still, everything was resolved beautifully and I'm more than delighted to call this book one of my favorites. ...more "
