I watched the Ghibli movie before reading the book – and was warmly surprised when my edition featured a short interview with Diana Wynne Jones, where she praised Miyazaki's creativity.

I just searched "Diana Wynne Jones" on Wikipedia, and read the part about her career. There's a quote there that says "Jones started writing during the mid-1960s 'mostly to keep [her] sanity', when the youngest of her three children was about two years old...". The quote made me laugh out loud, because that is precisely how Ms. Jones' writing feels like to me.

"Howl's Moving Castle" quickly became a comfort book for me. After a terrible event that happened in my life this year, I found myself re-reading this book, and laughing with all the characters: none of them are perfect heroes and none of them are perfect villains, but their desire to make life a bit warmer and the world a bit more colorful drives them through fantastic adventures. Howl is dramatic and childish. Sophie is too independent and stubborn. Oh, but what does it matter? I love them.

I identified myself quite a lot with Sophie. The whole deal of her becoming an old lady, what the spell meant and how she navigated through her condition filled me with hopes of dealing with every single strange situation that the world throws at me. It made me think about my own body, and how it bears the weight of being me. Whenever Sophie was supported by other people, I felt like I was being cradled in someone's arms and cared after.

I won't spoil the story, because it is fantastic. But I want to highlight that I hold great admiration and respect for Ms. Jones. I am thankful that she became a children's books author: given the opportunity of reading "Howl's Moving Castle", every child would feel better about themselves and all the other people in the world.

Thank you for all the laughter and all the company, Ms. Jones. You are highly missed. ...more "
