I was really curious for this book, since I really like the writings of Mieko Kawakami. In her other books, I appreciated the way she sets up the relationships between characters and creates intimacy between the reader and the protagonist.

In this book, this style was clearly visible once again, to my delight. Its difficult to point out exactly how Mieko creates this intimacy with the protagonist, but I really feels like you know the main character of the book. Whether it is the feelings she describes, or depiction of the environment she lives in, I dont know. Whilst reading the book, I was a bit awaiting for a climax, though that never came. The story kinda rippled along, which was a pleasant read, but could have used a bit more tension to my liking. Since this climax never came, I'm still wondering what Mieko wants to tell/show with her story, because it gives this feeling that there are deeper layers in the story. What does the title entail? Why this fascination with light? And why shouldn't the nights last long anymore (based on the final page)? Who are the lovers? Is Fuyoko one of the lovers?
Apparently the book managed to stir my thoughts, which clearly is a good thing....more
