Lots of people wear costumes every day. It's a bit of virtue signaling -- "I'm a cut-throat lawyer with my fancy suit!", "I'm a cut-throat pirate with my fancy parrot!" -- and a bit of lying to oneself, and a step towards being who we want to be.
It's like telling yourself that you're a good person, or that you would have won the popular vote except for all those illegal immigrants voting.
Even the people who don't obviously dress in costume do so anyway, just with more subtle costumes.
