It has that mix of intense romance, danger, protective men, and secrets that makes the story flow quite easily.
Angel, the protagonist, has the kind of presence that fills a room even when he doesn’t say a word; he has that tough-guy facade—the kind who seems to be wearing armor all the time, but little by little, cracks begin to show, especially since he has a double identity. And that’s where, for me, the character really becomes interesting. He’s not just the typical strong, possessive protagonist; it’s about discovering what lies behind that attitude and what he’s willing to do when someone he truly cares about comes into the picture.
Sophie also adds a lot to the story. I like that she isn’t just someone who constantly needs to be rescued. She has her own fears, her wounds, and her moments of vulnerability, but she also has a strong character. That combination makes the relationship more dynamic, because it’s not all about him protecting her and her letting herself be protected. There are clashes, conflicting emotions, and decisions that aren’t always easy.
Some books you read at a leisurely pace, and others practically pull you along by the hand. This one gave me more of that second feeling. It has intensity, tension, and that addictive quality that makes you want to keep turning the pages.
All in all, I found it an entertaining read and very much in line with what I expected from the new series: strong characters, complicated attraction, danger, loyalties, and plenty of chemistry between the protagonists. It’s not perfect, and I think some conflicts could have been explored in a bit more depth, but it has that essential ingredient that, at least for me, makes a romance work: making you care about what happens to the protagonists.
And once you reach that point, you’re hooked. Because it’s one thing to read a story, and quite another to start worrying about its characters as if they were your friends. I can’t wait to find out what’s in store for Bethan, Sophie’s friend and the main character in the next book, ¿which of the bikers is she with?.

The truth is, I There are books that entertain you, and then there are those that, even if they have their little flaws, manage to get under your skin just a little. *Ashen Souls*, by Anastacia V. Davis, definitely falls into that second group for me.
The truth is, I dove into the story expecting an intense, dark read, and that very atmosphere was one of the things that drew me in the most. There’s an almost constant sense of tension, as if beneath every conversation there were something none of the characters dares to say out loud. And I, of course, was delighted to suffer a little alongside them.
What I liked most were the characters and all the emotional baggage they carry. They aren’t simple people, nor do they always make the most sensible decisions—in fact, at times you just want to grab them by the shoulders and say, “Just say it already!” but that’s precisely part of their charm. They make mistakes, they’re overly protective, they hide things, and just when it seems like they’re finally going to let their guard down, they put up all their defenses again.
The thing is, the relationships between the characters have that underlying tension that keeps you turning the pages even when you know full well you’re probably about to get yourself into another mess. There are glances, silences, moments of closeness, and instances where you can tell there’s so much more beneath the surface. Not everything needs a grand declaration to feel intense, and I think that’s where the author achieves some of her best moments.
That said, not everything worked equally well for me. In some chapters, I felt the pace slowed down and that certain emotions or conflicts were repeated a bit more than necessary. There are situations I would have liked to see developed in greater depth because they had the potential to pack a much bigger punch. Sometimes I had the feeling that the story was about to deliver that emotional blow I was expecting… but it fell short.
I also think that, at certain moments, I would have appreciated it if the author had trusted a little more in what she’d already managed to convey. There are emotions that, once you feel them, don’t need to be explained to you three times. A glance, a phrase, or even a silence can say so much more.
But even so, there’s one thing I can’t deny: *Ashen Souls* made me feel things. And to me, that counts for a lot.
I’ve had moments of tension, curiosity, frustration, and that wonderful “just one more chapter” feeling—even though you know perfectly well it’s a lie because you’re going to end up reading another five.
Plus, since it’s the first book in The Ashen Echoes Duet, there’s that sense that there’s still so much left to discover. There are elements that seem strategically placed to leave us with questions, and honestly, some of them have been swirling around in my head even after I finished.
Is it perfect? No. I think it could have had a more balanced pacing in some parts, and certain scenes would have benefited greatly from a bit more depth.
Has it left me wanting more? Yes. And quite a bit.
In the end, I think that sums up my experience with *Ashen Souls* quite well: it wasn’t a flawless read, but it was a story with personality, intensity, and characters that manage to stir up emotions. And I’d much rather finish a book thinking about its characters and wanting to know what lies ahead for them than close it and forget about it the next day.
So yes… I need to know what happens next. And I suspect that was exactly the problem.
