After waiting six weeks for this book to come back in stock on Amazon and get to my house.............it was unfortunately so worth the wait it makes me sick. What can I say that other reviewers haven't already said? This just completely, unequivocally, irrevocably lives up to the hype. It can quite easily become your whole personality, which is rather inconvenient since the next book is over three months away. It will make you listen to the How to Train Your Dragon and Game of Thrones soundtracks on your runs. If you're particularly afflicted, you may even develop an unhealthy attraction to an overprotective, large, powerful black talking dragon. Like the rest of the world, you will almost certainly fall in love with the best man-not-written-by-Sarah-J.-Maas who is also somehow a combination of two of her best men: scarred shadow daddy Azriel meets the charisma and straight up physical prowess of Cassian. I have not recovered and never want to. And Miss Violet? Miss "I want to be a scribe!" Violet Sorrengail who bonds with aforementioned sexy powerful talking dragon? Total badass who doesn't know it. And the MAGIC! The magical aspects and powers in this book are so interesting and the different manifestations of the bonding magic made me scream. I loved every single tiny little aspect of this book.

I'll leave it at that, and this: I've heard comparisons to ACOTAR and The Hunger Games. Not really and not really. This is like ACOTAR in the sense that half of the time I was reading this I kept forgetting Xaden was not an Illyrian warrior. So Xaden is like an ACOTAR guy in that you will love him like one (and you will hate a certain character like we all grew to dislike a certain ACOTAR man, and for similar reasons). This is like Hunger Games only in the sense that there are a lot of "permissible" deaths in dragon college. But it wasn't as if everyone was out to kill each other because that was the goal or purpose--it was more that when a student died by accident, dragon fire, falling off a cliff, etc., no one was surprised (Jack and company are of course excluded from this statement). I honestly felt more Harry Potter vibes and before anyone comes after me, I mean this in the sense that the academic atmosphere and the quirky professors helping train dragon magic and the student camaraderie felt a tad like Hogwarts.

PS -- can Ms. Yarros and SJM please someday combine their superpowers and write a crossover where Manon Blackbeak and Abraxos meet Violet and Tairn because I would simply combust and throw my life savings away for it. I KNOW the whole wyvern v. dragon thing would be an issue, but I swear we can work something out… ...more "
