Our fmc Ever is one of the last Syphons, a kind of dragonshifter. Her father used to be king of the dragons until an unknown group of dragons killed him, the queen and the princes. Ever and her twin sister, who few knew existed, survived the ambush together with few other syphon kids. Together with some wyverns the small group lives in secret. We learn at some point that a group of sorcerers put a curse on syphons in order to stop them from turning into their dragons. This was the reason almost all the siphons were murdered.

The story starts with Ever fleeing a place where she was kept so people could drain her blood and sell it, since syphon blood is one of the most sought after. She manages to escape only to end up at the edge of a cliff. Deciding she would rather die than be caught by her captors again, she jumps of the cliff.
To her dismay she survives and is nursed back to health in a hospital. Since no one knows that she is a syphon and the hospital staff think she is just a dragon, they inform „the Horde“ (the group of dragons every dragon seems to belong to) of her existence. Since Ever thinks that the Horde and specifically the king are responsible for her father‘s death, she tries to flee.
After a wild chase through the city she is captured and brought to the Horde‘s place. There she is put in one of the prince‘s rooms to recover. She feels a strong pull to him but chalks it up to her being close to so many dragons.

The banter between Aeson (the secondborn prince) and Ever grows stronger and stronger (the banter is *chef‘s kiss*) up until the point where she is told that they are actually mates. They finally get it on but of course certain things happen which lead to mistrust between them.

Ever‘s only goal is to end the curse of the siphons which is linkes to the bloodline of a certain family of sorcais. Ecerything she does is motivated by this goal.

Open questions:
What happened in the wars many years ago? What is going on with that fae portal? Why was the matron necessary for its protection? What happens now that she is dead? Are all the others dead too? Does this mean they‘ll have trouble keeping the gate closed?
What is the king‘s agenda? Are Ever and the others finally able to turn into dragons? Are they actually soul-tied? Would be weird to mention it without it having anything to do with the story. Where did Ever go in the end? Who will become part of her Wing? Will she even get a wing? What happened with her old flight (or whatever her group was called)? Where they captured? Will she need to save them?

Most importantly: how long do I have to wait until the story continues? 🥺 ...more "
