I'm not sure what took me so long to read this since I am a lover of the science fiction genre, and well, you don't get any more science-fiction-y than Mr. Isaac Asimov and the Robot series.

Sigh. Okay, first off, I will say I enjoyed the core of the stories, the ideas contained within them. The notion of how will society change and operate with androids among us and what do you do with sentient machines? Mr. Asimov certainly has some inventive ideas... but (you knew there was a but coming, didn't you)...

I did not enjoy the story telling (yes, there is a difference). This novel is definitely a sign of the times and that time was the 1950s, where "men were men" (i.e. jerks à la "Mad Men" television series). I just couldn't get over the superior way man dealt with the robots. And I don't just mean mep-moop-mep-stiff-arms-moving-up-and-down robots, I'm talking about sentient robots who have feelings and can learn! These robots are used merely as machines, which I guess is natural, but come on! how can you treat a robot as a simple machine when it shows fear when you yell or has anxiety when it does something wrong? Oooh, and on top of that the robots called man "master". So naturally my mind kept going back to the history of America, you remember slavery? The parallels of mans views and treatment of the robots are similar to that of African Americans... at least I thought so and at times felt a bit uncomfortable reading this novel.

All in all, I did like the novel. I mean, the three laws of Robotics is just pure genius and Asimov paved the way for so many authors and pop-culture to run wild with his ideas. And I must also mention I'm a sucker for robot stories, that's why I love Data from "Star Trek The Next Generation" and Vulcan's, yes, I know they aren't robots but a society based on logic! how wonderful... anyway, I'm all over the place with this review, but final word - I recommend this novel for all science fiction fans, you gotta pay homage to your elders. ...more "
