“لا أريد بالصديق ذلك القرين الذي يصحبك كما يصحبك الشيطان : لا خير لك إلا في معاداته ومخالفته ، ولا ذلك الرفيق الذي يتصنع لك ويسامحك متى كان فيك طعم العسل ؛ لأن فيه فيه روح ذبابة ، ولا ذلك الحبيب الذي يكون لك في هم الحب كأنه وطن جديد وقد نفيت إليه نفي المبعدين ، ولا ذلك الصاحب الذي يكون كجلدة الوجه : تحمر وتصفر لأن الصحة والمرض يتعاقبان عليها ، فكل أولئك الأصدقاء لا تراهم أبداً إلى على أطراف مصائبك ، كأنهم هناك حدود تعرف بها أين تبتدئ المصيبة لا من أين تبتدئ الصداقة .

ولكن الصديق هو الذي إذا حضر رأيت كيف تظهر لك نفسك لتتأمل فيها ، وإذا غاب أحسست أن جزءاً منك ليس فيك ، فسائرك يحن إليه ، فإذا أصبح من ماضيك بعد أن كان من حاضرك ، وإذا تحول عنك ليصلك بغير المحدود كما وصلك بالمحدود ، وإذا مات .. يومئذٍ لا تقول : إنه مات لك ميت ، بل مات فيك ميت ؛ ذلك هو الصديق .”
