For late 1800's/early 1900's though the writing was very good, I'm used to really having to work to understand the writing from some earlier works; except the Cockney-American accent being written phonetically in the fourth story, that was awful to read.
I did find myself a little disappointed by how little the king in yellow actually came up, he had such an interesting concept and I really had wanted to see more of it front and center instead of in the background. That being said, it was really interesting to see the king in yellow creep up in the background of the stories. All of the stories were very good and interestingly done, while creating a semi-cohesive sense of how infamous the play is and its effects on those who read it.
Despite the four stories all being by the same author, they all had very distinct narrative styles. I also found the progression between to stories from like "okay these guys were just delusional and projecting the king in yellow" to like" holy crap! the king in yellow is right here and actively a problem" to be really interesting to experience.
I actually have to come back and give this five stars for how much it has haunted my life since I read it. I have since got extremely into the whole lore and fandom behind this....more
