This book has long been one of my childhood favorites, and I am happy to report that it 100% lives up to my memories of it, perhaps even more so. The descriptions of Green “Isn’t it nice to think that tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet?”

This book has long been one of my childhood favorites, and I am happy to report that it 100% lives up to my memories of it, perhaps even more so. The descriptions of Green Gables, Avonlea, and PEI are beautiful and lush, and Anne remains charming, cheerful, and so special, as she grows from 11 to 16 (and a half!) during the course of this book. I loved hearing of her imaginings and adventures, her hopes and dreams, her love for her family and friends, and even her quick rages. I also loved seeing how Anne matured and changed as she gained more life experience and met new people, from learning to keep some of her thoughts to herself to her final apology to Gilbert, acknowledging the time they’d lost as friends due to her stubbornness. I also appreciated how much Gil respected Anne’s boundaries with him throughout the years, apologizing and trying to make amends, but ultimately not pushing himself on her.

The most moving relationships are the ones Anne developed with Matthew and Marilla. As Matthew put it, Anne coming to them was not a accident of fate, but truly providential. The Cuthberts saved Anne by not only providing a roof over her head and food to eat, but also but encouraging her and teaching her and loving her deeply. They truly saw her, Matthew from that first drive, but Marilla soon after, and they treasured the light and joy she brought to their house, even through the moments that exasperated them. Anne brought life to Green Gables, and I don’t know but that their health would have failed even earlier if they had not had her physical help and good spirits around the house.

I was heartbroken when Matthew passed, not only because such a gentle soul was gone, but because the way he died, being shocked at the loss of their entire savings, was such a sharp, hurtful ending. I much preferred the way my favorite mini-series adapted it, with him passing suddenly on his way in from the fields that he loved so. For a man who was so quiet and taciturn, Matthew never held back in showing his love for Anne. In comparison, Marilla might have seemed less attached to Anne, so I loved what she said to Anne as they were mourning Matthew together: “it’s never been easy for me to say things out of my heart, but at times like this, it’s easier. I love you as dear as if you were my own flesh and blood, and you’ve been my joy and comfort ever since you came to Green Gables.” Theirs is a wonderful example of a found family, people who aren’t connected by blood but by love and shared commitment to one another. Some might see Anne’s stepping back from going to Redmond College as letting go of her dreams, but to me, it’s just an adjustment based on new facts: Marilla and Green Gables were more important to her, especially when with some adjustments, she could still achieve her goals.

I have to also note that the audiobook I listened to was excellent. There are a lot of options for this book, but Colleen Winton does an excellent job differentiating the characters with various tones and cadence of speech which certainly enhanced the listening.

I’m excited to keep reading through the series, as I remember some of what happens, but not everything, and it feels just as fresh as when I read it the first time. I’ll also be rewatching the mini-series, which follows the first book pretty faithfully (though everyone seems way older than 11-16). If I recall, the mini-series pulls away from the books when we hit the Anne of Avonlea years, but I will enjoy they both all the same. And I’m so excited because I’ll finally be visiting Prince Edward Island next month!
