Psychologists make a distinction between semantic memory—knowledge of general facts—and episodic memory, or recollection of personal experiences. We’ve been using technological supplements for semantic memory ever since the invention of ...more

This, in my opinion, is the most profound passage in the entire book. I've always desired to keep a detailed journal but could never figure out why it was so hard for me to do so. I've always chalked it up to laziness, but maybe it's something else that is implied by Chiang -- that we tend to like our memories as we remember them, even if they're not completely accurate. We're fond of memories based on how we remember them, so documenting them in a journal could create literal interpretations that differ from how we experience a memory; one can see how problematic this can become.

Marcus Aurelius
“Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”
Marcus Aurelius

“Do not try to save
the whole world
or do anything grandiose.
Instead, create
a clearing
in the dense forest
of your life
and wait there
patiently,
until the song
that is yours alone to sing
falls into your open cupped hands
and you recognize and greet it.
Only then will you know
how to give yourself
to this world so worthy of rescue.”
Martha Postlethwaite
