Number one and to me the most important part of a comic is the art. Saga had a unique style with a very proportional approach to the figures without an awful lot of detail which keeps a retro look. Some great use of colour which seems to be painted with a water colour sort of look with a very subtle use of shading. The composition in this was a very big plus with lots of large and different shaped images always keeping the viewer BEGGING for the next image. Some of the pages were actually just purely focused on art with no dialogue.

Second, this Brian K. Vaughan (author) knows EXACTLY what he is doing with the format and order of this comic. He knows exactly how to manipulate the viewer into being interested here for them to be curious and learn a little about it ( not too much to keep the suspense) and keep an excellent balance between action, romance, comedy, drama and backstory. The very first fucking issue has everything! how could you possibly want more?

Third, its very hard nowadays to have an actually unique and still interesting fantasy or science fiction universe and Vaughan pulled it off. This comic is also dealing with multiple universes so possibilities in this large scale story are endless. This is great! I'm practically bursting to see more and read on.

Fourth, the characters in this are INSTANTLY likable, relatable and still exotic to keep the characters unique to this specific series (as opposed to a series like star wars where most if not all the actual MAIN characters are just standard humans with some weird ways of talking). Also, Vaughan makes them all different with their own complex personalities and backstory which reflects on their character. The coolest, most bad ass character yet in the comic is called The Stalk. A blond female half woman and half spider hybrid bounty hunter. Was absolutely ridiculous and also in a way scary. Another very unique and visually interesting character is Prince Robot IV. An apparently cold hearted, battle hardened prince with a TV as a head. He seems to be one of the other central characters with parallel stories. To sum all this up, Vaughan has an excellent ability to portray characters in completely unexpected ways according to their relevance in the story.

Fifth, another point I didn't bring up in the last review was the narration of the comic done by Hazel, the baby when she is already grown up in the future. as if she is retelling this story. This is another interesting touch which allows the reader to relate more and have an inside commentary on some of the events and reflecting on them in hindsight.
And lastly I mostly admire that Vaughan focuses quite a lot on the relationships between each character with each other in the series rather than a cliche good vs evil battle or an overwhelming focus just on the art or sex. No matter what type of relationship it is like: man and woman, parents and child, man and cat, man and ex girlfriend...etc, Vaughan portrays them well with accurate emotion.

In conclusion, comic book readers HAVE TO, by the law of nerds, read this fucking comic. ...more "
