Veiled Justice is the start of a new Heather G. Harris series set in the Other Realm. This time, she's taken Stacy Wise, a wizard and Detective Inspector for the Connection (sort of the the Other Realm's version of police, judge, jury and executioner), and made her the protagonist for this paranormal urban fantasy detective novel.
For Stacy's first outing, she is called in when there's a death at a high-society Other Realm party. When the victim turns out to be Helga, an ogre who was hired 'off the books' (as in she wasn't yet qualified to take on this sort of job legally) to protect a rather obnoxious wealthy young man guilty of loutish, laddish behaviour, then Krieg, the High King of the Ogres, joins her investigation. The situation is complicated by the fact that it's Stacy's brother who finds the body. It's even more complicated when, the following night, he finds yet another dead body at a competing high-society Other party. (Who knew that even the magical rich delight in trying to outdo one another?) Stacy and Krieg are given 24 hours to solve the crime before she must, reluctantly, hand over both cases to another detective, one who isn't nearly as judicious and astute as she is. Needing to clear her brother's name and find the real murderer quickly, Stacy agrees to work with Krieg and even go without sleep to meet the deadline.

Part police procedural, part urban fantasy and filled with potential sparks between Stacy and Krieg, Veiled Justice brings in a crossover cameo from Amber, the witch from the Other Witch series. However, don't despair if you've not read any of the previous Other Realm books/series. As always, Harris is a natural at making new readers feel at home and reminding devoted fans about who's who very gently -- just in case we might have forgotten between books.
