It makes me want to snarl (seriously, do people in this book just walk around all the time, teeth bared?). But I could not winnow away and I finished it.

This book has been reviewed to death and by people far better at it than me. But I wanted to throw my irritations with it into the ring.

1) SO MANY REPETITIVE PHRASES. I managed to work in most of them above, but I must also point out how weird it was to constantly call people the male and the female instead of he/she. Also, all the smutty parts had way too many references to licking. Weird visuals with this.
2) Weird worldbuilding. I get what winnowing is, but why can we winnow super far sometimes and then have to take many-stop-winnowing-trips other times? What is this cauldron? I get that it’s an actual cauldron, but it also seems to be a portal and it seems to wander around, maybe invisibly, maybe not, maybe in another dimension, but also stay put sometimes. It seems to be good and evil. It’s a spiritual object or whatever, but also it’s a kitchen appliance. Interesting choice.
3) Their powers. Kinda goes with winnowing. They’re always almost out of power. Then suddenly they aren’t. Also, Feyre’s powers, such as flying, seem to be a massive struggle forever, she never really learns them, then she can just do it easily during a moment of needing to.
4) This brings me to all the coincidences in the final battle. Seriously how often is someone going to seem evil then not be, or be a friend then turn evil, then turn back again?! People aren’t this complicated. You may as well read it assuming everyone is going to turn like six times at convenient moments. There’s a moment in the battle where Feyre says, “Perhaps in this… in this, we would be lucky, too.” Was that a meta moment by the author? Is she trolling us all with these coincidences?
5) FEYRE. Ok, what is even special about Feyre that caused all this? I’ve read three books and I don’t know, other than that she’s a good hunter and somehow got sent on this journey but also seems to be everyone’s savior. Why’s she the chosen one? There should be a reason in a fantasy!
6) Speaking of Feyre… this book is getting large enough in its scope of characters and settings that having one first-person narrator isn’t enough. It’s tedious listening to the info dumps to catch her up on what’s gone on elsewhere, and watching her observe other relationships growing is weird and peeping-Tom-ish.
7) Finally, Tamlin has such a weird arc in this series. Love interest turned abuser turned now suddenly I feel a lot of sympathy for him and how he’s been treated. Why is this happening?

I think that’s it. Despite all that, I kept reading. I don’t understand why. How could I simultaneously hate and love this? Probably because Book 1 and 2 were pretty good. That being said, I’m going to need a few palate cleansers before I get Book 4 and read another 757 pages of people winnowing and snarling and blah blah blah. ...more "
