“However, it was there that I began to realize that my initial intuitions about alcohol and other drugs were precisely upside down. Rather than provide a solution to my problems with living, they had chipped away at every prospect until only the barest shred of life remained. I’d sought wellness and became sick; fun, but lived in a constant state of anxious dread; freedom, and was enslaved. In just ten years, my sources for solace had totally betrayed me, carving out a canyon deep and unlivable. Drugs were destroying every aspect of my life, yet my days revolved around self-administering until I passed out.”

“Courage means doing what is right or just, despite your fear. Ignoring, or disregarding, your fear goes against your instincts, which ensure your survival.108 So what’s wrong with numbing my fear before a presentation? My natural nerves spurred me to prepare. They ensured I wasn’t complacent and drove me to rehearse and plan. When I began to rely on alcohol to dampen my fear, I stopped preparing in advance. Instead I stayed up late, drinking the night before and putting off my rehearsals. Preparation made me a good public speaker. But once I started drugging myself with alcohol, knowing I wasn’t prepared, my nerves skyrocketed. Drinking impedes your natural capacity to remember, learn, and solve problems.”

“If I am a bit repetitive at times about issues like shrinking the critic and grieving the losses of childhood, it is my attempt to find different ways to emphasize the great importance of engaging these themes of recovery work over and over again. If you find yourself lost and not sure of how to get back onto the map, these themes will always be key portals for reentry.”
