i will never ever get enough of shane hollander and ilya rozanov. i've never been so grateful to be literate. this book is so gooey and sweet but also full of anguish and pain and i ate it up so bad. this one is so much more focused on the struggles of homophobia in pro sports, as well as the intensity of the spotlight on shane and ilya specifically which is a similar but unique situation unlike any of the other GC main couples. the way it handles the actual day to day of ilya and shane's closeted relationship and their mental health struggles was so good and genuinely made me ugly cry several time. my ilya ;(

im just going to rant a little below so i can't guarantee it'll be spoiler free

it's so beautiful and refreshing to have their love story like this, openly loving each other TO each other but not able to do it publicly; there's not a thing where you ever doubt their love, but they do handle the pressure of the closet in such different ways that creates conflict. i love the way ilya's depression is fed into the way he interacts with the ppl around him, and i love especially how the timeline of all of this ties into troy's story from Role Model!! he's so used to keeping everything inside, and now that he can be more soft and emotional with shane he's so terrified of ever losing it that he hides all the negative things he's feeling. i LOVE ilya's therapist, that woman is a genius she deserves a kiss on the mouth. the depiction of therapy is incredible, i love this plot line so much, and i wish galina was MY therapist. their whole fight at the end genuinely made me SOB, shane's whole revelation of how much ilya has sacrificed to make their relationship work was so crucial, bc ilya WOULD do anything for them, which seems cute and romantic at the end of HR but i love that we got to see the darker side of that devotion in TLG. and yeah it's fucking heartbreaking that the book ends out like that bc yes it's a HEA but i also see it as a quite bittersweet outcome. everything shane feared about coming out, everything he was ever terrified of happening if he and ilya got outed DID happen. he lost everything he'd poured his whole career into, and yes he gets ottowa, but it's just more proof of the big picture which is homophobia in pro sports !!!! what i love so much about this series is the different experiences that different couples have in the hockey world. this series is so gay obviously but ultimately it's about the only handful of openly queer athletes in the league, which in the grand scheme of things, is the tiniest percentage. ...more "
