Time will tell if I made the right choice in reading this third while making my way through the TOG series…

REVIEW (January 2026)

The novella format is, IMHO, one of the hardest to write since the writer needs to be economical and the plot needs to be fast paced. I’m not a huge fan of this format since by the time I start to get into the story, it’s over. However, these five novellas are the exception, partly because they are good tales and because they fill out the plot holes and character backstories of the TOG universe from the 1st two books.

I must say that part of the reason that I enjoyed them as much as I did is that I am following the publishers recommended reading order for the series. Even though these tales proceed the first book of the series chronologically, the way they are written, it works better to read them third (between “Crown of Midnight” and “Heir of Fire”). Even though COM ends on an unfinished note, the lull of Celaena’s journey from Rifthold to Wendlyn is the perfect time to reminisce on the events that led her to that point. Not so incidentally, we meet certain characters that are essential to understanding the TOG part of the MaasVerse including: Sam Cortland, Arobynn Hammel, The Pirate King, Yrene Towers and Lysandra.

Filled with suspense, action and drama, these tales are not to be missed.
