I have a problem where I don't like reading a lot of books that are hyped up a lot because it tends to set my expectations quite high, and then I tend to not like the book because it didn't reach my unattainable expectations. A "I love you"

I have a problem where I don't like reading a lot of books that are hyped up a lot because it tends to set my expectations quite high, and then I tend to not like the book because it didn't reach my unattainable expectations. As such, I was terrified that I was going to read this and hate it.

And instead I am now just in the group of people who love this book. There are very few books that I have read in my life thus far where I have cried at the end of it simply because it is over. And I did for this one. I am tearing up once again writing this review and thinking about it.

I have looked at other people's criticisms of this book, and I do see where they are coming from with some of the critiques surrounding social issues and it being long. But truly I do not care. I think sometimes a book can look into your soul and reflect pieces of yourselves that you don't show. I think a book can unexpectedly articulate thoughts that you didn't even know you had. That is what this book did for me.

The characters- god the characters. The characters were written in such a way that I cannot explain. There are pieces and elements of all of them that I can see myself within. And they felt real for me. They felt like living breathing people. I truly do not even care that in reality this book is completely critiquing my generation in multiple instances because they felt real and flawed and messy and everything.

There is so much I could say about this book. I don't know if it is because of the time in my life when I read it or if it is because I unabashedly love Macbeth or if it is because of the writing style itself but this book has become a new favorite in just a matter of days. I put off work and social interaction just to finish reading it. I loved this so much

I definitely do not think this is a book for everyone. Being a gamer also probably helped me enjoy elements of this more than other people. I would give so much to be able to play the games in this book (especially as I am not a visual person in that it is difficult for me to imagine things that I cannot physically see or experience). Having physical limitations and relating to Sam in a lot of ways for that and some of the scenes where he talks about certain things was felt. There was just so much in this book that I grasped onto and never want to let go of. It made me sob, it made me laugh, it made me feel so many things. "I had recently bought a copy of this book at a library book sale- excited to finally own a copy. But for their birthday one of my close friends has requested a copy of any of my favorite books. Since we became friends 4 years ago over our shared love of a video game, I thought it was only fitting that I actually annotate this book about people who came together over games and give them that copy.
