But finally when his dad threatens to send him to a military academy Greg realizes, he has to shape up or get shipped out. Greg Heffley, like I said before, he is a wimp. He is a quitter and never sticks with anything. For example, he joined the soccer team and quits after three games. His best friend, Rowley, is a suck-up. Greg convinces Rowley to do things for him. For example, when they find out the bus-stop has been rezoned and they have to walk, he makes Rowley give him a piggy-back ride. Holly Hills is a girl that doesn't really notice Greg until he shakes her hand at his church. She is also one of those types of girls that always hangs out with her friends so that makes it difficult for Greg to ask her out. Then they meet at a roller-skating rink and the only words she said were "Isn't your name Fregley?" The story takes place in his hometown as well as his house and school. The conflict in the story was that Greg's dad wants his son to be a man and not a wimp, so in this case, he threatens him to send him off to Spag Union, a military school. The resolution for this conflict is his dad doesn't send him off because Greg made his dad not look like a fool in front of the entire neighborhood by going up a tree to grab a present that his little brother, Manny, threw at a half-year birthday party. At the half-year birthday party all the parents try to make the baby laugh but his dad didn't want to do it and if Greg did something he would owe him big time. My opinion on the book is that it is a really funny book that it made me laugh numerous times. My favorite funny part was when, at the end of the book, a new girl named Trista comes up to Rowley and Greg and introduces herself and Greg thinks she is pretty. Then Greg and Rowley are thinking the same thing so Greg came up with a plan and it showed a picture of Greg taking a baseball bat and hitting Rowley in the head with it. My recommendation for this book is that anyone who likes a good laugh once in a while should really read this book. ...more "
