Book cover for Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler's Guide to Unshakable Peace
So Sarah is right to break the spell of our amnesia and tell us that curriculum is not something we buy, but something we teach. She brings this up because she knows that we have not only forgotten the meaning of the word, but with it have ...more

curriculum is not something we buy, but something we teach. we have not only forgotten the meaning of the word, but with it have forgotten the aims of education. we are tempted to follow closely, even slavishly and with a great deal of anxiety, the specifications of a published resource (our “curriculum”). We cover material, we rush to keep up or catch up, and what is lost in the process is a love of mathematics and our perception of its truth, goodness, and beauty. We instead simply get through the book. Ah, yes, let’s just get through it.

“Instead of waiting for community, provide it, and you’ll end up with it anyway.”

“We need to quit trying to be awesome and instead be wise.”

“Ah yes, “The Calling.” This is certainly a favorite Christian concept over in these parts. Here is the trouble: Scripture barely confirms our elusive calling—the bull’s-eye, life purpose, individual mission every hardworking Protestant wants to discover. I found five scriptures, three of which referred to salvation rather than a job description (Rom. 11:29, 2 Peter 1:10, and Heb. 3:1).”

“When times get hard,” Mr. Anderson says, “as they will, and when marriage becomes strained, as it will, and when Kenneth and Millie are so desperate they want to give up and walk out, may they find strength in You, Lord. May their faith draw them back to one another, and at the moments when they need it most, may they remember the love they feel today.”

“It is no wonder humanity has long preferred legalism, which involves much cleaner territory. Give me a rule any day. Give me a clear “in” and “out” because boundaries make me feel safe. If I can clearly mark the borders, then I am assured of my insider status—the position I feel compelled to defend, the one thing I can be sure of. I want to stand before God having gotten it right.”
