Before I begin, I want to let you know that I received a complimentary copy of The Lacemaker to review.
In the last year I’ve become a true fan of Mary Kingswood’s regency romances. I thoroughly enjoyed all of her books from The Sisters of Woodside Mysteries (set during the regency period.) I’ve come to love reading Mary Kingswood’s books for several reasons. They are “drawing room” books rather than “bedroom” books. So, if you are wishing for sex scenes, you won’t find them here. What you will find are pages of witty conversation using the language of the time period. So much so, that the characters really come alive. There’s just enough detailed descriptions of day-to-day life to satisfy and often as I read her books, I find myself totally transported to the setting. The research she puts in to her writing is admirable.
I began The Silver Lining Mysteries series last month with Book 0 (Prequel): The Clerk and then Book 1: The Widow.
The book I will be reviewing is Book 2: The Lacemaker. There are more books in the series to come, but at this time, they have not yet been released. The books can be read independently, however, after reading the first few, I’m of the opinion that you might find the books more enjoyable by having some background that the first books provide.
Basically, a ship wrecks off the shores of England, with only three survivors. The books in this series allow us a glimpse into how this shipwreck affects the lives of those who survived as well as those whose lives were changed because of those who didn’t.
I truly enjoyed The Lacemaker. In The Lacemaker, three orphaned sisters’ (Caroline, Elinor “Lin”, and Penelope “Poppy” Milburn) lives change dramatically when they discover a relative has died in the shipwreck, leaving them with an inheritance of a house and a bit of land far afield from where they grew up. Up until that time, they had to make ends meet by making lace and other work. So, they leave behind all they know, to begin life anew in Bursham St. Matthew as ladies of independent means. There they encounter all their neighbors, village life, our “hero,” Charles Leatham, and the story goes on from there. Unlike the main characters in the first two books of the series, Caroline and Charles seem at first abrasive. They don’t get along at all and often have heated words. But, as the story progresses, they become quite loveable and we celebrate with them as they come to appreciate each other. Theirs isn’t the only romantic story, each of the sisters and other characters have a bit of romance as well. My favorite character in the book is Mrs. Leatham, Charles’ stepmother. She so wants Charles to marry Caroline for reasons later revealed that make his stepmother even more endearing.
If you are a Georgette Heyer or Jane Austen fan, you will love Mary Kingswood books as much as I do. ...more "
