After waiting so long for this book, I was prepared to just absolutely love it, at least as much as Vicious . I mean, Schwab clearly put a ton of work into this book, so my adoration should be correspondingly greater, right? Unfortunately, wrong.

Don't get me wrong--Vengeful is still a great read. It's still dark, there's so much girl power, and getting more of Eli's story actually makes me feel somewhat sorry for him. But the sense of the screwed-up little family that we had with Victor, Sydney, and Mitch wasn't quite there. In fact, Victor wasn't there much at all, which I found sad. Instead we had more Eli, which is appropriate as I feel like he's the vengeful one compared to Victor's vicious, and a lot more side characters and story lines, which, while great, just cut into that feeling of domesticity that I loved so much about Vicious.

As I said, we get a lot more background on Eli, and unsurprisingly, it's pretty tragic. All the best heroes and villains need a tragic backstory, and Eli has that in spades. The abuse and the deaths that he experiences really explains his personality and his obsessions, and I definitely closed this book looking at Eli a bit differently. He's still a crazy mass murderer, but he's a troubled crazy mass murderer.

In terms of girl power, we're introduced to Marcella and June. June is an interesting character. Her friendship with Sydney is sweet, and I'm looking forward to learning more about her. But Marcella is really the star. Guys, Marcella is a fireball. Not literally--although her ability produces basically the same result--but her personality, her attitude, and her fashion sense put her in that upper class of villains that are both incredibly stylish and incredibly terrifying. Her determination to get her revenge against those who have wronged her and to take what she sees as her rightful place in the hierarchy of the city is frightfully unyielding, and it's a ride to see all the crazy things Marcella is willing to do without batting an eye.

So why didn't I love this book? Well, as I said, I missed my little villainous family. The frequent time jumps were a bit confusing at time--I'm usually okay with a few timelines, but this book had a lot. And it felt really long. Like, way longer than it needed. It took me more than three weeks to read this book, and it's never taken me that long to read one of Schwab's books. As a result, I really liked Vengeful, but I don't think it quite lived up to Vicious. Nonetheless, I'll definitely picking up the third book (if there is one) ASAP to see how everyone's story ends. ...more "
