It was so well-crafted, so impeccably plotted, and I was genuinely stunned by the "big reveals" sprinkled throughout. Y'all it was just SO GOOD!!

In The Children on the Hill Jennifer McMahon makes us question everything we think we know about monsters. We must consider how monsters are created, how they hide from us in plain sight, and most importantly, if monsters can ever be good.

In 1978 we begin at The Inn, a residential psychiatric treatment center. The Inn is run by renowned Dr. Helen Hildreth who lives on campus with her two grandchildren. "Gran" as she's known to her beloved grandchildren, Violet and Eric, is the sun around which the entire inn revolves. Her staff follows her with unquestionable loyalty, and her grandchildren flock to her to learn and experiment and grow. They are a perfectly happy, if isolated, little family. This all changes the day Gran comes home with the silent, feral Iris, who she says needs to stay with the family for a while. Violet, who has always wished for nothing more than a sister, is over the moon about the family's new addition. She immediately accepts Iris into their inner circle, taking her to the drive-ins, to the library, and most importantly, into the Monster Hunters Club where Violet makes sure Iris understands the most important lesson of all, monsters are everywhere.

In 2019 we join Lizzy Shelley who has dedicated her entire life to tracking down and hunting monsters. She's noticed a disturbing pattern of girls who go missing in towns that have their very own monster legend, and she's on the trail to Vermont to find the most recent girl. Lizzy is determined to find these girls that society is so ready to cast aside because she knows better than anyone that monsters are real. And she can't help but think the person responsible for these disappearances is the worst monster of all, her sister. ...more "
