Literally me after finishing this book.

I honestly don't even know where to begin. So much happened in this book that I'm still trying to wrap my mind around it. Also, I am so happy that I read The Assassin's Blade before reading this one. I highly recommend it.

For most of this book, it seemed to be a very solid 4 stars and then that ending happened and everything just came at me (including tears) that I had to bump it up.

The story starts out with Aelin on a mission to gather allies on her way to Tesseran. However, she soon realizes that this will not be as easy as she thinks. Many do not support her and many are scared. But she is determined as ever to prepare for this war - more determined than you may think. Meanwhile, in another place, Elide sets out on her own journey. One that she hopes will bring her to her Queen, never knowing the ally she meets on the road may turn out to be a little more complicated than she knows.

Empire of Storms jumps between many POV's as it weaves this complex story together. When we begin, everyone is spread apart with a different goal in mind, and over the course of the book, we get to watch and wonder just how this will all come together. And Maas did a fantastic job of weaving this tale of suspense and surprise.

And can we just talk about character growth? I ended up loving characters that I initially disliked going in. Case in point: Manon. I know that everyone loves her but it took until this book for me to jump on that. But I loved where her character went here. Almost every character showed some sort of growth but none more than Aelin herself. She surprised me at every turn. Just when I was ready to criticize her for her choices, I was proven wrong. Basically, I should just trust that Aelin knows what she's doing and go with it.

But that ending though... How? I was speechless, I dropped my book in shock, I even had tears at points - both in joy and then in pain. And now I'm torn on the next book. I initially was super happy because I love Chaol and have missed him but now I'm just like, but what about what happened here? When do we get answers for this?? How can you leave it here?? What's going to happen??
