“No one understood the value of something that was measured with a different standard than they themselves measured by. Matthew was thought to be worthless because he did not communicate how everyone did. My father thought me worthless because I did not have the same business sense that he and my brother were born with.”

“Tell me how to earn my father’s favor, Joseph. You always know what to do.” I am sure my words came out muffled through my hands.
“Perhaps you seek the wrong objective.”
I did not understand. I met Joseph’s calm gaze. “What do you mean, seeking the wrong objective? Isn’t every son supposed to honor their father?”
“Yes, but honor is not the same as earning his favor. You are trying to earn something you cannot obtain.”

“Ambition is your own yoke, not His! And the lust of wealth, the desire for power, the craving for human love—all that is a yoke of your own making—and if you will wear it, it will gall you. There is more joy in being unknown than in being known and there is less care in having no wealth than in having much of it. We often go the wrong way to work in seeking true restfulness and happiness.”

“It's in these moments when our children push us to the brink that we see how desperately we need the work of the Holy Spirit in us. It is only through Him that we can find real peace-the kind that allows us to be peacemakers when our children are anything but peaceful. Parenting as peacemakers helps our children learn how to problem-solve, how to reconcile, and how to restore relationship.
But we can model this only by cultivating peace within our own hearts first, leaning into the power of the Holy Spirit and hiding ourselves in the safe harbor of Jesus' peace.”
