I wonder why the author illustrates a young boy with only one eye. Maybe the author title the book “Wonder” because she makes the reader wonder about “Wonder” at the very first time picking up the book
The book is about a young boy named August who has a cranio-facial abnormality who tries to connect with the world around him after a long time stays at home due to his facial surgeries. He always has an inferiority that he is not normal, he is different from everybody else. Knowing that, his parents always try their best to make August feels like he has all the love in this world. I really like it how his parents make a decision letting him go to school. He just cannot stay at home and be protected by mom and dad for the rest of his life. Everything he has to do is to face with the world, and Auggie’s parents have made a right choice. Even though people out there may be horrified by Auggie and tear away from him. But this is life, he has to deal with it even when it hurts him so bad.
Attending school when he turns 10, this age is not too late for starting to go to school. But it’s still challenging because other kids get used to school for 4 years already but Auggie still hasn’t got used to it. Of course, he cannot get rid of the curious looks of everyone for him on the first day of school. Luckily, he can make some new friends. Summer and Jack find Auggie is a cool, smart, and fun kid to play with so they can be friends easily. Even though Summer is being teased by others kids for choosing August as her friend, but she doesn’t care about them. For me as a teenage girl, Summer has my admiration. Because I have been friend with a lot of people, and I know they won’t stand up and protect for a weird-friend-of-them like Summer does for August. Jack is in the opposite side of Summer. Jack like August for who he is, but Jack is afraid to protect the fact that August is a funny boy to play with. So he hurts Auggie accidentally on Halloween night without knowing it. I don’t like it when Jack treats August like that. You can’t deny someone is your friend just because they have a facial abnormality, that hurts them so much. Having that disease hurts them, a friend that they believe is their true friend deny them because of that disease hurts even more, I believe. Luckily, in the end, everything turns out to be great when they can be friends with each other again. This is what I like the most about kids. They can accidentally hurt each other but they can still be friends again. They always give each other a chance to expiate. Adults don’t, the discomfort feeling for each other still remains inside them.
August is a strong boy, even though everyone in school mortifies him but he’s still growing stronger and stronger. For me if I was August, I’m afraid that I could not be as strong as he is. I cannot be brave enough to go to school and being teased by everyone, I cannot even be optimistic and hilarious like August.
Overall, this is a great book about the journey to life of a kid who has facial problem tries to communicate with the world. The writing style of the writer wont make you feel bored when reading the book, also the idea. High recommendation for those who wants to go back to their childhood and parents who have kids like August. ...more "
