So a bunch of arrogant, self-centred people fall in and out of love, torment and belittle each other, cry and eventually die. I couldn’t feel sorry for any of them; their anguish and troubles were well-deserved and self-inflicted, so why should I care? I don’t get why this book is so well-loved. I mean, come on, how can you handle all the drama?

I also particularly disliked the way the story is narrated by Nelly Dean, the housekeeper in Wuthering Heights. I know this is supposed to be a bold move on Bronte’s behalf, but it didn’t work for me; it just seems so unrealistic that a person could recite a story with so much detail. Apart from that, Nelly is a really biased narrator and I was often annoyed by her constant criticism of others.

On the other hand, I have to admit, that some scenes were really well written. Reading about (view spoiler) was really enthralling. At some parts the writing becomes so good that I had to stop and reread, in order to make sure I was taking everything in.
But what truly makes Wuthering Heights stand out as a book is the choice of scenery. This is a story of raw, untamed emotions and it takes place in a wild, dangerous landscape. The treacherous Yorkshire moors perfectly mirror the heroes’ personalities and emotions. They are as unpredictable, as merciless as the place they call home.

Wuthering Heights was a weird case of a book for me. I don’t really know if I liked it or not, but I was kind of hooked. I think my problem was that I couldn’t really connect with any of the characters- which is a weird thing itself because almost every time I am drawn towards the darkest and most complicated ones. I would say that maybe Bronte’s novel lacked in solid character development, and this is why I didn't feel close to anyone this time, but on the other hand this is considered a classic and I don’t want to be shot at.

P.S. A little out of place, but if anyone ever again tells me that Snape’s reaction to Lily picking another man over him, as well as his behaviour towards Harry were over-the-top, I’m going to point towards Heathcliff and his lovely plan of revenge. ...more "
