“We all live day to day completely oblivious to the fact that we’re a part of a much larger and stranger reality than we can possibly imagine.”
“One writes music because winter is eternal and because, if one didn't, the wolves and blizzards will be at one's throat all the sooner.”

“For the highest man shall also be the highest lord on earth. There is no sorer misfortune in all human destiny, than when the mighty of the earth are not also the first men. Then everything becomes false and distorted and monstrous.
And when they are even the last men, and more beast than man, then
rises and rises the populace in honour, and at last says even the
populace-virtue: 'Behold, I alone am virtue!”

“Sometimes I think the purpose of life is to reconcile us to its eventual loss by wearing us down, by proving, however long it takes, that life isn't all it's cracked up to be.”

“Boj proti zlu! A vždycky budou králové, více či méně krutí, baroni, více či méně divocí, a vždycky bude omezený lid, nadšeně vzhlížející ke svým utlačovatelům a nenávidějící svého osvoboditele. A to všechno proto, že otrok mnohem lépe rozumí svému pánovi, byť sebekrutějšímu, než svému osvoboditeli, neboť každý otrok si výborně dokáže představit sám sebe na místě pána, ale málokdo si představuje sám sebe na místě nezištného osvoboditele. Takoví jsou lidé. Takový je náš svět.”

“Men can imagine their own deaths, they can see them coming, and the mere though of impending death acts like an aphrodisiac. A dog or rabbit doesn't behave like that. Take birds -- in a lean season they cut down on the eggs, or they won't mate at all. They put their energy into staying alive themselves until times get better. But human beings hope they can stick their souls into someone else, some new version of themselves, and live on forever.
As a species were doomed by hope, then?
You could call it hope. That, or desperation.
But we're doomed without hope, as well, said Jimmy.
Only as individuals, said Crake cheerfully.”
