Book cover for The Reluctant Apostate: Leaving Jehovah's Witnesses Comes at a Price
I would not have been unduly surprised if a lightning bolt had ripped through the sky and zapped me to a crisp after my first few clicks on “apostate” websites. Witnesses are trained to be gripped by horror and loathing at the mere mention ...more

“Many people carry the misconception that each mind control organization has an evil designer and mastermind that founded it, to serve the sinister purposes of the mastermind. This is not the case. Strong mind control organizations are a product of evolution, survival of the fittest, and trial and error.”

“Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned. - Anon”

“What typically happens when an individual is reviewing evidence that might disagree or contradict the initial idea or belief is the ‘makes sense – STOP’ perfunctory analysis syndrome. The person begins reviewing the information, focuses on a single topic or tenet, finds a way to discount it or explain it away and then immediately concludes that all the information can be explained away or dismissed in a similar manner, and going through each and every fact is a waste of time. The impatience felt by the investigator is a manifestation of the confirmation bias. Many cannot overcome it and fall victim to the ‘makes sense – stop’ perfunctory analysis syndrome.”

“Mormon Prophet Wilford Woodruff stated, when he was president of the church: The Lord will never permit me or any other man who stands as President of this Church to lead you astray. It is not in the program. It is not in the mind of God. If I were to attempt that, the Lord would remove me out of my place, and so He will any other man who attempts to lead the children of men astray from the oracles of God and from their duty. 71 This trump card, simply stated is this: God will never punish a member for taking direction from church leaders. This takes away any objection to obedience, because the leader and the directive does not have to be correct, the leader’s direction does not have to make any sense, the instruction could actually be immoral and it wouldn’t make any difference. The member is obligated to obey, and questioning is often met with impatient dismissals.”

“When the information that a person has access to is controlled, his ability to develop and exercise critical thinking skills is greatly diminished. The church accomplishes censorship of information in several ways. The most overt method is the closing of church archives and hiding historical documents that call into question the divinity of church origins or contain teachings contradicting current doctrine.”
