If the world was perfect and everyone has the ability to speak their minds without fear of being bullied, laugh at and threaten. But let’s get real, in today’s world we don’t have that luxury. But he does give you a little bit of a getaway, and a reason to break out the Kleenex and have a good cry. Don’t we all need an excuse besides our own drama, I thought so! While the book has us laughing, crying and every other emotion we don’t want to admit but it’s true. There are times when you don’t want to put the book down and there are other times when you want to slap Peter Van Horn! And then you giggle because you hate the fact you actually feelings about a book.
Hazel Grace Lancaster isn’t your standard cookie cutter teenager, NO she was given her first death sentence at the age of 13 after useless rounds of chemotherapy and radiation. A clinical trial, is her miracle a drug that didn’t work for others surprisingly worked for Hazel. And during the time Hazel Grace “fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once”. (page 125) We all fell in love with her, so did Augustus Waters. A young teenage boy who was cancer survivor, who frequently put the killing thing between his teeth while never giving it the power to kill him. (a metaphor: he’d put a cigarette right between your teeth and never lighting it..) My first thought was he’s mental! Then you find out that is who he is. He expresses his self through the use of metaphor and symbolism, don’t we all have that friend we want to smack? (insert laughter) That person who has a memory and thought process, BIGGER then other’s normal vocabulary?
Forced by her doctor’s and parents to attend support group meetings, isn’t that what every depressed, terminally ill teenager wants to do? All because Hazel was watching America’s Next Top
model continuously for days! Wait, let’s think about this Netflix was created just so we could veg out in front of a screen weather it’s a TV or computer and watch episode after episodes of TV shows. Though in Hazel’s case doing this means she is “depressed”. Can we say UGH, why they have to label everything! Anyway, Hazel runs into Gus…. They stare at each other, Gus does his disgusting thing with the cigarette and Hazel lays into him telling him that he ruin the wonderful progress he was making. She is totally floored that a boy has any interest in her! “I’m a grenade waiting to happen, at some point I’m going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, Okay” Why would anyone like her? And for that matter, it’s her own excuse to keep people away. It’s simple really, she has been living out a death sentence since 13. If she doesn’t make friends, allow people to get close she doesn’t hurt anyone. And while death is painful, Hazel wants to minimize her lasting impact on the world.
Gus falls in love with Hazel, quickly and hard. To the point he will do anything for her, now remember it’s different for Hazel (quote above). He reads the book in which Hazel has read over and over to the point she can quote it line by line. An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Hauten (not a real book), Gus has an explosive reaction after reading the book as well and since he is madly in love with Hazel he wants to make her dying wish of meeting Mr. Van Hauten in person. He uses his “Genie” (similar to Make a Wish) to bring her wish into a reality.
While their story has more than I have revealed if I wrote it all in this required “review”, Why would you want to read the book? That is if you haven’t already ruined it by watching the movie, which is good as well. BUT definitely different then the book, there is one piece of the book I will leave you with “ You Don’t Get to Choose if You Get to Hurt in this World But You Do Have Some Say in WHO hurts you” take these words from John Green and apply them to your extraordinary life and journey. Remembering you do have some say on who is in your life. ...more "
