Acknowledgments
So far, seems a bit banal. I'm giving a lecture about masochism in Dec, so I felt obligated to read this extrememly popular book which is supposed to deal with it. The protagonist so far has had a "thunderbolt" (cf, Godfather) moment on meeting Mr Grey, who is young, good looking and rich, but as yet shows no personality. She has heretofore been diffident toward all males near her. So the set up is that she is overwhelmed by her own fantasies, although those fantasies are not shared with the reader. Seems a bit shallow, but maybe that's the point. We will see.
Now that I’ve finished the book, it is not really about masochism. The female protagonist simple puts up some of Grey’s sadistic fantasies because doesn’t want to lose him - because he is exciting, rich, plays Chopin, flies his own helicopter, and seems taken w her. The book is mediocre, on about a 6th grade level.
