“What Mara didn't see was that this time with Pearl was the gloaming: that space between day and night, that lowering of the sky, when the light pales to blue and everything is outlined in gold. It's the most beautiful part of the day - the golden hour, the photographer's favourite. But it can't last. To stay in the gloaming is to hold off the night. But if the night never comes, then neither can the day.”

“Linus. I heard you had quite the adventure.” “Indeed. A bit out of my comfort zone.” “I expect that’s how most explorers feel when they step out of the only world they know for the first time.”

“The things we fear the most are often the things we should fear the least. It’s irrational, but it’s what makes us human. And if we’re able to conquer those fears, then there is nothing we’re not capable of.”

“I thought I might get a cinematic love story, and I've gotten some of that. But sitting here in my parents' house, with Ava a couple feet away from me, eating chow fun and watching Melrose Place, I realize that all of the sets and the props and the performances, the scripts that take years to write; the perfect camera angles and painstaking lighting, the directors that call take after take until it turns out right, the projections on the huge theater screens - so much larger and louder than life - it's all done in hopes of portraying what I'm feeling right now. As much as I had wanted a love story out of a movie, I know now that movies can only hope to capture this kind of love.”

“I used to tease Kyra about her fascination with comics, but she took it in stride.
"People have used art and graphics to tell stories for centuries," she said once. "We could all do with more heroes and tricksters and storytellers."
I told her, "I'd rather have stars than heroes.”
