“The poem moves by enacting a sort of distracted, dreamy attention, from thinking about a general idea, to specific observations about nature (the woodpecker), to language theory. These ideas “rhyme” in the sense that they have latent connections that we would not ordinarily perceive, but which are brought out by the poem. To bring out these connections, these conceptual rhymes, is one of the main purposes of the poem.”
