This experience hark If I’m being completely honest, I got a little nervous about this book about 30% of the way through. Speaking with full candor and complete transparency, there were long stretches where I had absolutely no idea what was going on.

This experience harkened back to my days of listening to Project Hail Mary. I bumbled along with every train related description. Words like “interdiction” hold no true meaning for me. And there were several metaphysical concepts that went right over my head… and numbers, a lot of numbers.

The biggest consolation I have is that Carl also seemed to have no idea what people were talking about either. His many statements about hating math resonated with me on a molecular level. I, too, am also mathematically challenged. There is a reason why I teach English and use rubrics that automatically calculate grades for me.

My experience in a nutshell:
Carl: “Yeah. Not helping. Jesus f***. Nobody can follow this.”
Katia: “Just pretend like you half understand”
Carl: “Sure. Why not? That's wild and weird it just makes everything more, not less, complicated, which goes back to my original statement. It's amazing that you could figure this out. Really, I don't wanna come across as an *** but how does this information affect us now other than giving me a bigger headache than I already have? God,” he shrugged.

All of this to say, that just like with Project Hail Mary, whenever the narrative circled back to moments I did understand, I enjoyed them immensely. … So, I’ve got that going for me, which is nice.

While this may not have been my favorite of the trio of Dungeon Crawler Carls that I have read, it was still amazing. I listened to the “Ludacris” action scene no less than three times and teared up when Carl talked about his mom and dad at the end.

Onto book four. Same plan as always: follow Carl, ignore the math (and any references of maps that could also be described as spaghetti), and plan to unexpectedly cry at some point.

PS: The absolute meta-moment in the epilogue was *chef's kiss* ...more "
