Wow, what a series starter!
I’ll start by stating that I would usually choose epic\grimdark fantasy over the classic option. Grit, political machinations, action, and morally grey characters are my preference within the genre. However, I’ve heard so many praises about this series and have read the awesome prequel before, so I decided to try it out.

In this first installment, we follow Calen and his friends Rist and Dann as they prepare for their test of manhood- delving into a dark forest for 3 days and coming back alive. What appears to be a challenge becomes closer chaos. After time, they find themselves by sheer accident in the middle of a clash between the emperor’s soldiers and rebels with a hidden secret and make decisions with severe implications. From that point the story gets a few tones darker (including abuse and murder) and the three of them aided by new friends find themselves chased like to the city of Belduar that has withstood the empire for over a thousand years.

In my opinion this book can definitely appeal to anyone seeking to start their voyage into the genre. Here be the classic combination of elves, dwarves, and humans with a mix of some other races on the side. The quest trope is quite prominent and so is the adventure and some punch battle scenes. As an avid fantasy reader meeting the classics, what kept me in this book was the authors’ smooth writing style all along the way. It had me turning the pages even when I could guess most of the familiar developments ahead of time.

That being said, the last quarter or so of the book was very much where it took off regarding pacing, action and raw battle. The stakes were high, some character flaws resurfaced, and bloody rage made a real entrance. In addition, the small but acute changes in technology and worldbuilding were very much appreciated and noticed. This part gripped me by the throat and in my opinion showcased how much potential this series has and what can come ahead.
