I don't know what it was about this book. I feel as though in hindsight, this wasn't actually a five-star read. I feel like there were probably plenty of flaws and plotholes that I missed, but since this was my first proper thriller, I really, really enjoyed it. I thought everything went together well. Of course, there were parts where I was confused, but that always happens to me. I was always on edge with this book. I got so anxious reading this. I even cried at one point, but I don't know if that was because I was high-strung from emotions in general or if it was the actual book.

There's something about an average person solving the own mystery he discovered. I think all the ends were all tied together, and I thought every character was worth my time. I was just really looking forward to finishing it. I did prefer the 2016 chapters than in 1986. I was more interested in how Ed tried to resolve the mystery than how it was discovered and how it went down. My favorite character was Mr. Halloran, for sure. I like how all characters were written since I was able to distinguish them all.

I think the one thing the characters lacked was a deeper connection overall. It really did seem like these "friends" were never really friends but stayed together for convenience and circumstances. I think I would have liked it better if they had more of a genuine friendship, or at least just Hoppo, Fat Gav, Ed, and Nicky. I really think that Nicky wasn't important? I thought she'd have a more important role in the book, but IDK, she felt kinda throwaway. Actually, overall, this was probably a very plot-driven story. I think the plot had me hooked that I found the character's lack of personalities excusable.

I'm really pleased that this was my first full thriller. I think this will get me more hooked onto thrillers. I'm more willing to step into this genre because this was such a positive experience. I hope that I enjoy more thrillers in the future, and then maybe I can tell when a book is actually a good thriller or not. ...more "
