Every one who looketh on a woman so as to covet her,
Nicholas
The Greek word used here is also used for the Hebrew "covet" in the Septuagint (intro to Hermeneia Mt 1-7 commentary by Ulrich Luz has this to say on the Septuagint's influence on the author of this Gospel, "Matthew is strongly influenced by the LXX. While Luke inserts Septuagintisms in certain sections and avoids them in others, Matthew’s language bears the imprint of Biblical Greek throughout...". ) This verse is also referenced in line with "covet" and it's meaning in The Greek-English Lexicon by Low and Nida.Rotherham's Emphasized Bible here chooses to translate Matt. 5:28 w/ "covet". Most translations use "lust" or "desire" but none of these words fully capture the connotation of an "intent to acquire" referenced in the Concise Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament in connection with this verse. The Wind Spirit Bible (WSB) captures this intent in it's translation with, "everyone who stares intently at a woman to plan illicit sex with her". Ancient Greek lexicography expert Dr. A Nyland also translates this intent well in The Source New Testament with, "anyone who considers sleeping with a married woman".
