“Disagreeing with his cousin’s characterization of the Bible as “nonsense,” he wrote that, on the contrary, one could find in it “all of the most difficult questions concerning Morals, Lawmaking, Industry, and Medical Science … resolved in the most simple way, often treated from a contemporary point of view.” He also urged her to read his own letters to her more carefully, saying that each sentence contained something specific and that “if perhaps the surface seems smooth to you, the water is very deep, and often the smoother the surface the deeper the water.”

“Tisn't life that matters! 'Tis the courage you bring to it" … this from old Frosted Moses in the warm corner by the door. There might have been an answer, but Dicky Tasset, the Town Idiot, filled in the pause with the tale that he was telling Mother Figgis. "And I ran—a mile or more with the stars dotted all over the ground for yer pickin', as yer might say…." A little boy, Peter Westcott, heard what old Frosted Moses had said, and turned it over in his mind. He was twelve years old, was short and thick-necked, and just now looked very small because he was perched on so high a chair. It was one of the four ancient chairs that Sam Figgis always kept in the great kitchen behind the taproom.”

“Mom promised she’d buy groceries today, but it looks like we’re out of luck. Again. I’ll worry about dinner later. Annie ate most of her giant slice of pizza plus a cookie, so she’ll probably be fine for another hour or so. I plop onto our sagging couch, replaying the scene from this afternoon in my mind one more time. “Robin,” my mother said as she pressed a bill into my hand, “take your sister to the mall. This should cover the bus ride and lunch at the food court.” A million questions popped into my head, but I was speechless at this unprecedented gift. I forced myself to close my gaping mouth. “I’ll be out late, kiddo. Take care of supper.” Placated by her familiar words, I nodded. When she says she’ll be out late, that can mean she’ll arrive home shortly after the bars close, or sneak in just in time for breakfast.”

“I gasp when I realize that her small suitcase is gone. The big, beat-up one is still shoved to the back of the closet, but the little one is nowhere to be found. It’s hard to swallow. Did she pack a suitcase after sending us out? Where was she going? Why didn’t she say anything? “I’ll be out late, kiddo. Take care of supper.” I replay her words, trying to remember exactly how she spoke, the expression on her face. I was so startled by her generosity of giving me money for the mall that I didn’t think about what else seemed off two days ago.”

“Otkako znam za sebe, uvek sam osećao da sam sam, nekako otuđen od sveta, od larme i mediokriteta koji se šire poput zarazne bolesti. U jednom trenutku, pomislio sam da bi knjige mogle da me izbave od tog osećaja napuštenosti i apatije, ali ne treba previše očekivati o knjiga. One vam pričaju priče, omogućavaju vam da proživite, posredno, deliće stvarnosti, ali nikada vas neće uzeti u naručje da vas uteše.”
