“Other prominent members of the Washington Opus Dei network were soon elevated to high-profile positions in the new administration. Mick Mulvaney, a supernumerary, was made director of the Office of Management and Budget. Later, he’d be promoted to White House Chief of Staff. In between his meetings with billionaires, Wall Street executives, lobbyists, and conservative backers, Mulvaney also invited Jeff Bell—another supernumerary that Tellez and Fieler had tried to get elected to the Senate—to the White House. The subject of their meeting was recorded simply as “Opus Dei.” Bell later said that the meeting covered “religious and political matters.” Two members of the Catholic Information Center board would later join the administration: Pat Cipollone as White House counsel and Bill Barr as attorney general. Larry Kudlow, who had been converted by Father McCloskey, became director of the National Economic Council. Not since the Franco regime had the movement had such direct access to political power.”
