After reading The Reader, book 1 of Sea of Ink and Gold, and it becoming one of my favorite books of all time, I was very excited to Star Rating: 5 stars

After reading The Reader, book 1 of Sea of Ink and Gold, and it becoming one of my favorite books of all time, I was very excited to read the 2nd book, The Speaker, that had just been released. The Speaker continues the story of Sefia and Archer as they try to navigate the complicated and confusing political world of Kelanna where they live. Sefia’s parents used to be members of a organization called the Guard who have been trying to sweep all the ruling families of the 5 different island kingdoms- Deliene, Liccaro, Everica, Roku, and Oxscini- off the map so that they can take absolute control. As Sefia’s parents learned more about the Organization that they have joined and their goals, they become disillusioned and decide to flee and go into hiding, raising their daughter in absolute seclusion. Archer is a young boy who was kidnapped and forced to fight in gladiator-like matches against other kidnapped boys. Due to a series of circumstances that I won’t go into because of spoilers, Sefia recuses him from his captors. Throughout most of book 1, Archer cannot speak because of what happened to him, however, because of Sefia and her support; he is able to start speaking at the end of book 1. Whereas The Reader focuses mostly on Sefia’s development, The Speaker focuses on Archer’s development.

The most prevalent theme is this book is dealing with PTSD- recognizing and accepting that it is occurring, learning to live with it and move on from it, and how it affects others that are involved with the one suffering from the disorder. Chee goes into really great detail and explores Archer as he goes through all the different situations. She doesn’t try to smooth over what Archer is going through and she doesn’t idolize Sefia from supporting him through his journey. I just love how she handled this theme in the book, as it was very respectful, informative, and raw way.
Another thing that she did in a respectful way was the diversity. As far as I know, not a single character in this book is completely White, multiple members identify as being on the LGBTQ+ spectrum, and multiple members are going through various different mental illnesses, specifically PTSD, although there were others such as OCD. After reading this book, you can clearly see that Chee made a conscious effort to make this relatable no matter what walk of life you are coming from it when you decide to pick it up, and I really respect her for that.

Finally, I wanted to talk about the extended allusion to Peter Pan that was in this book. Over the course of the story, Archer gathers a following of young boys (I won’t spoil how), which reminds me a lot of the Lost Boys. They call Archer chief and worship him in the same way that the Lost Boys worship Peter Pan. When Sefia comes into the picture, they treat her like Wendy with all the curiosity and jealously involved, which was really entertaining to read. Archer’s main villain in this book is Serakeen who is a pirate, and at one point in the story, he does lose a hand (Captain Hook anyone?) I loved finding all the connections to Peter Pan that Chee was able to weave throughout this book. To be honest, I am not for sure if she was consciously making an allusion to Peter Pan or if it just developed on accident, but either way it was very enjoyable.

In conclusion, I loved this book as much as The Reader, and I am eagerly awaiting the release of the 3rd book. If you are looking for a fantasy book that is unique and that doesn’t fall into any of the troupes of YA, then you should really pick up this book. You will not be disappointed! 5 amazing stars and continuing to be one of my new favorite book series of all time! ...more "
