okay, if you like high fantasy, you’re gonna like this book. it’s a 800-page story with amazingly rounded characters, in a hi (not too many spoilers, but contains some info about one of the main religions that’s only revealed until later in the book).

okay, if you like high fantasy, you’re gonna like this book. it’s a 800-page story with amazingly rounded characters, in a highly detailed world with a long history. it has a beautiful love story, great (female!!) heroes, global politics, and well thought-out religions. it has everything you need and want to absorb yourself in a different world for a very long time. if you read books to be entertained, to escape from the real world, this one’s for you. it does those things extremely well.

this book, however, didn’t personally tickle me in any way. and i do like books to do that. i like books to make me think. to make me look inward and challenge parts of myself, preconceptions i had. i like to learn while reading a book.

and if it doesn’t do that, at least i like them to challenge the status quo of our world. this book had a big opportunity in that regard. as rick riordan says in his review, it challenges gender views by simply taking equality for granted. that was fun, as a woman. men and women are also free to love whomever they want. that was fun, as someone from the lgbtq+ community. but then, the queen of one of the most powerful countries has to have a baby in order to prolong her bloodline, one that begun when a power-hungry man basically deified himself by taking credit for the heroic action of a woman he harassed incessantly. a religion in which this woman is literally called “the damsel” even though she was a whole-ass warrior who slayed the biggest enemy of the known world.

how can there be gender equality in a highly hierarchical society where the most powerful woman is valued only by the ability to produce an heir??? and where sexism and gender roles are at the foundations of the religion??? this book would’ve been so much cooler and would’ve made more sense if its immense and thought-out history had contained a feminist movement.

okay anyway i’ve been reading this for over two months now so imma need some time to recover. looking forward to having something else on my bedside table but will also really miss ead and tané and chassar and honestly kalyba too she was cool as fuck. i won’t miss niclays roos he was awful, i would’ve been fine if he’d died. goodbye ❤️ ...more "
