"I really don’t like to add to my DNF pile, so I’m stepping away from this book for a second time, but I’m not sure I’ll come back to it. I don’t find the characters to be likable or genuine, and their interactions read as either smarmy or hurtful. The conflict is about to come to a predictable head and I’m just not very interested in dealing with the angst these people are bringing upon themselves." — Dec 22, 2025 08:14PM

"I am seriously tired and bummed out by the women in this book tearing each other down all the time. There was a trigger warning about fatphobia in the author’s notes, but that, and the constant designation of moral value to food, also irk. Both of these themes have become distracting, to the point where my focus shifts from the story to how disappointed I am to be listening to whatever is going on at the time." — Jan 09, 2025 11:59AM

"“This is a bookshop. Everyone skulks.” 🤣
This is cozy enough that I will probably continue listening, but so far I’m failing to see much substance beyond the drama within a friend group of wealthy young-20-something-yo socialites in WWI London. If the characters were more likable/relatable, I think I’d enjoy this more. Archie and the cat are very endearing, though!" — Jan 02, 2025 05:21PM

“I love my mom so much. I don't care if that's corny to say. I think on my next birthday, I'm going to buy her a present. I think that should be a tradition. The kid gets gifts from everybody, and he buys one present for his mom since she was there, too. It think that would be nice.”

“I don’t know if I will have the time to write any more letters, because I might be too busy trying to participate. So, if this does end up being the last letter, I just want you to know that I was in a bad place before I started high school, and you helped me. Even if you didn’t know what I was talking about, or know someone who’s gone through it, you made me not feel alone. Because I know there are people who say all these things don’t happen. And there are people who forget what it’s like to be sixteen when they turn seventeen. I know these will all be stories some day, and our pictures will become old photographs. We all become somebody’s mom or dad. But right now, these moments are not stories. This is happening. I am here, and I am looking at her. And she is so beautiful. I can see it. This one moment when you know you’re not a sad story. You are alive. And you stand up and see the lights on the buildings and everything that makes you wonder. And you’re listening to that song, and that drive with the people who you love most in this world. And in this moment, I swear, we are infinite.”

“King Arthur: I am your king.
Peasant Woman: Well, I didn't vote for you.
King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.
Peasant Woman: Well, how'd you become king, then?
[Angelic music plays... ]
King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king.
Dennis the Peasant: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.
Arthur: Be quiet!
Dennis the Peasant: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!”
