It is a very me book in the sense that it is stories within stories and very mythological and symbolical and there is a huge love and cherishment for libraries, but I just couldn't connect to the characters.

Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a fine enough protagonist, but I thought he was a tad too much of a nerdy everyman for people so see themselves reflected in. I didn't really get much of his personality and I also didn't feel like his romance with Dorian felt fully-developed. I also felt like he did a lot of being unconscious and falling over and falling into darkness. However, I did like his little asides on gaming lingo and references, I found them quite charming. Dorian I really feel nothing about...and that's kind of it.

The writing was lyrical and I loved the breadcrumbs the author left to get you to follow along. But I did find the story quite slow at times and found it hard to get through. I was really craving more action at some points. At times I got a strange mix of the Monsters Inc doors and the holiday doors from The Nightmare Before Christmas. I did laugh when there was a brief mention to the Night Circus, Morgernstern's first novel.
