I had read "Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee" many many years ago and that was so impactful it made me question everything, but this book made me realize that questioning is not enough. I/we need to do much more work to understand the legacies of settler colonialism/Indigenous genocide that has been part of our history along with the enslavement of Africans, since day one. It continues in our "exceptionalism" and wars of aggression to this day, all over the world, but the violence and injustice against the original occupants of this land (and against African Americans and others), continue.
The descriptions of founding fathers such as George Washington ordering the wholesale slaughter of women, children, and elderly; the military decision to go after the 500 most important towns of a particular tribe in the east; the fact that forests were groomed for millenia to attract game; all opened my eyes to the truth that this was not a "wilderness" with far scattered small tribes, but rather a populated civilized continent. All of our national wealth and power was derived through theft, enslavement, and slaughter. I guess I had known that in a vague way, but this book makes it terribly real and specific.
I had swallowed the myth that the bison were wiped out by trophy hunters and short-sightedness. I didn't realize that this was part of the genocidal war strategy-to wipe out the food supply of the original inhabitants and kill more through starvation. It started with the burning out of all of the east coast farm communities-burning all of their crops and their stored grains, and continued with the slaughter of many tens of thousands of sheep belonging to tribes in the southwest, and all of the plains bison to the point of near extinction. By design.
We have relied on these genocidal precedents to justify our slaughter of civilians in countless wars since the beginning of this country. Deputy Asst. Atty. General John Yoo used precedents from our genocidal history to justify torture and the breaking of the Geneva conventions in our treatment of prisoners of war at Guantanamo in our war on terror.
There are so many examples of how this book woke me up, many many parallels with the ongoing genocidal settler colonialism happening in Palestine (and not coincidentally, subsidized by the US.)
I would actually like to own a copy because it is worthy of a re-read, and there are many books listed at the back in a suggested reading list that I would like to sample. ...more "
