For good reads this quarter I read Slated by Terry Teri. Kyla Davis is a teenage girl that has been Slated. When you are Slated the government wipes your memory and the only thing they tell you is why you were Slated, what you must do, and how you must do what they want. The author's purpose for writing this I believe was to entertain us. Teri states ,”In my room I shut the door and grab my sketch pad, hands shaking. My Levo begins to drop: 4.4...4.2…” (109). This entertains the reader keeping them wondering how low her Levo will drop before she will write what she needs, will she forget? The author does a very good job of keeping the reader hooked by using many different types of rhetorical devices.

Terry Teri did an amazing job of getting the theme through to the reader. The theme is to never stop asking questions. At the beginning of chapter 24 the narrator asks, “don't you ever wonder? What if I was a terrorist? What if I killed people, like these students; threw a bomb on their bus” (131). Kyla was talking to her friend after running around the track frantically away from her thoughts. This quote explains the theme because Kyla is starting to ask questions about being Slated. If Kyla doesn't ask questions she will never figure out why exactly she is where she is and how she got there. If we didn't ask questions we would never figure out the unknown.

Terry Teri’s style of writing for this book is descriptive writing. The narrator says, “pulsing, dripping red pain, a vise clenched tight around all I am, all that I may be” (307). When Teri has the narrator say things to describe her pain so vividly it's almost as if the reader can personally feel her pain. Terry uses description so perfectly I can almost imagine seeing the narrator in pain. Terri Terry is very good at using sensory words and describing just how the narrator feels. This book almost tells you just how you should feel by how descriptive it is. Her descriptive style of writing is very effective.

I loved this book. I love reading books that I can, in a way, feel exactly how the narrators feel and with this book it did a great job of describing just how the narrator felt. I have not read any other books like this before. It was very different, but it was amazing. If I could change one thing about this book, I would change the amount of information about how Kyla got Slated. The beginning of the book through me a little off by Kyla going from room to room and then going straight to being adopted. I did not quite understand how she got to that point. Overall I, once again, loved it and I can not wait to read the sequel. ...more "
