Gaines. This book took place in a Louisiana sugarcane plantation in the 1970s, this is a powerful depiction of racial tensions arising over the death of a Cajun farmer at the hands of a black man. Some of the characters were Clatoo ,Chimley , Mathu , Fix , Coot , Lou Dimes , Jack Marshall , Jacob ,Beulah , Jameson and Uncle Billy. I found this book in the library the cover of the book caught my intention.
One day, this lady name Candy Marshall which was a white plantation owner, she discoverd that Beau Boutan has been shot on a black man's yard. Candy promptly confesses to the murder. The lady Miss Merle does not believe her. She insists the help of seventeen other old black men by having them come to Mathu's yard, each with a shotgun and one empty number 5 shell. Candy believes that if she gets as many people to come to the sense that the local Sheriff will not be able to solve the crime. A trial for all blacks and whites involved in the shooting takes place a few weeks after the event. The judge places everyone on probation for five years. At the trial's end the man Mathu disappears with the other black men in a car. Never seen again. The theme is what makes” it a classic in A Gathering of Old Men is black men recreating their image from weak black men to strong black men. To help us understand this theme Gaines uses a variety of narrators. The use of several different narrators helps us understand the story from a community prospective not just one-person point of view. All the narrators come from the same community but they are all different. They are young, old, black, white, poor, wealthy, educated and uneducated telling the same story using their difference experiences to interpret the same outcome”. My favorite quote is “women”. My favorite part is when she told Mathu to run away don’t stop running keep running. Because he was a father figure to her she wanted to protect him.
I believe this book was great I know men or boys would love to read this book. I would read it again because it has moral to it....more
