The writing was hands down the most frustrating part of this book. It was incredibly jarring. Like one minute you’d be cruising along just reading and then you’d get hit with something like “a conglomerate of pedestrians” or “comical fervor” and it just throws you the hell off. You can tell Haley is a baby writer and still has a lot to learn and a better editor would’ve gotten this across to her. This read like a high schoolers creative writing assignment. If I were grading it, it would’ve gotten a C. Because wow it needs a lot of work

Also I felt nothing for the romance. There’s like absolutely no yearning whatsoever and they’ve been in love with each other since they were five??? And not a single yearn??? Uh-uh. There were moments in the book that could’ve been turned into yearning but just weren’t. (Like that moment in the coffee shop. If you know, you know.) Also they didn’t talk like life long friends do. No banter, quips, jokes or hints of intimate knowledge of each other. Just Brad and Stacy dating in high school. I felt nothing. (I also just finished a five star romance prior to reading this book and let me tell you, Cat Sebastian knows how to write yearning. Pham and Sebastian are like night and day writing wise tbh)

Also the character work was kinda.. idk mid? Like Declan had no character, it all went to Blair. And the character Blair had started off likable but then she just got more immature and frustrating as I got further into the book. The friends were bland, so was the aunt and the mom. The background characters needed a little more life to them. (While You Were Sleeping and When Harry Met Sally are good examples of background character work if you need any)

The pacing in this book is ok though. She seems to have a better idea of writing structure wise. So there’s that at least. Other than that though, this book needs to go back to the drawing board.

I wanted to like this book but nah. It sucked. Sorry.

Idk I’m getting a copy of Now Back to You soon so hopefully reading that and a thriller will help cleanse my pallet after this lol.
